The Jeep Wrangler has been a pillar of off-road SUVs for decades. With its iconic, utilitarian appearance and practical build, Jeep brings its Wrangler into the 21st century with its brand-new electrified model, the 4xe. By blending the hardy vehicle with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, today's off-roaders can rest easy knowing their Jeep now contributes less harm to the environment, with reduced carbon emissions and improved fuel efficiency. Here, our team at All American Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram takes a closer look at the electrified Wrangler 4xe, including its design, features, and performance capabilities.

Trim Levels and Configurations

The Wrangler 4xe is available in four different trim levels: the standard Willys, the Sahara, the Rubicon, and the High Altitude. Each model comes with the same powertrain but offers varying amounts and levels of features, design options, and add-ons. Standard features include power windows with one-touch down, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, illuminated cupholders, low-back bucket seats, a 7-inch touch-screen display, and a GPS antenna input. You also have the option to add features such as a media hub with two charging ports, storage bags and a cargo tub liner, and an automatic dimming rearview mirror.

Design and Exterior Features

The newly electrified version of the Jeep Wrangler remains completely recognizable as a Wrangler, retaining its iconic silhouette and customizable features, such as removable doors and a removable roof as well as a windshield that folds down. Roof options to choose from include a soft top, a hardtop, and a sunbonnet top, depending on your choice of trim level. You can also upgrade your windshield to Corning Gorilla Glass, which makes it up to three times more resistant to damage from cracks or chips.

Available only in a four-door configuration, the 4xe seats up to five and comes with the option of two additional colors: Earl, a silvery-aqua, and Reign, a metallic purple. Otherwise, you can still choose from a wide range of colors, from black and white to bright yellow and orange shades. There's also a new Wrangler decal on the front fender that features the American flag. Coming up on the 20th anniversary of the Rubicon, Jeep also offers a special edition Rubicon 4xe, which features a unique grille design in addition to some extra interior features.

Powertrain and Performance

The Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid powertrain adds electric motors to its two-liter turbocharged engine without sacrificing power and performance. It's paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and produces up to 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of instant torque. Rather than giving up its performance capabilities to an electric powertrain, these numbers make it the most powerful Wrangler available.

As a plug-in hybrid, it can travel for up to 21 miles on battery power alone, and thanks to the battery's seal, you're also able to ford water up to 30 inches deep. As with every Wrangler, the 4xe is Trail-Rated and is the first plug-in hybrid that offers front and rear locking differentials for optimal traction control.

Interior and Technology Features

The interior of the 4xe is as practical as ever. For example, seat adjustment remains fully manual so that you can easily hose down the entirety of the inside of the vehicle, and all-weather floor mats are included as standard. The cabin is comfortable, with room for five passengers and up to 67.4 cubic feet of cargo space with the back seats folded down.

There is the option to upgrade to a heated steering wheel and seats as well as premium trim materials, such as a leather-wrapped steering wheel, parking brake handle, and shift knob, as well as caramel accents or premium door panels.

When it comes to infotainment, a 7-inch Uconnect 4 touch-screen display comes standard, with the option to upgrade to an 8.4-inch display. Also included standard is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot capability, and an Alpine premium audio system. In higher trim levels, you'll have access to five years of SiriusXM's Travel Link Service as well as built-in emergency assistance calling capabilities.

Charging and Range

Thanks to its hybrid powertrain, the 4xe has a total range of up to 370 miles, with an estimated 49 MPGe rating. You have the option to get a Level 2 charger installed at your home, which can fully charge your battery in just two hours, or you can use publicly available Level 2 chargers when you're on the go. With the included Level 1 charger, which plugs into any regular power outlet, a full charge will take roughly 12 hours of charge time.

In its default hybrid mode, the SUV is powered by both the 2-liter turbocharged engine and the electric motors at the same time. Alternatively, its electric mode can move you 21 miles with almost zero tailpipe emissions. In addition to its fully electric and hybrid modes, there is also an eSave mode that prioritizes the combustion engine, allowing you to save the power in your battery for later use. On top of this, regenerative braking routes braking power right back into your battery to extend its charge.
